Most people use cosmetics and personal care items without a second thought, believing that the government oversees their safety. No health studies or pre-market testing are required for these products before they hit the shelves. With over 80,000 chemicals in the market today, it is said that only 10% of those are actually tested for safety. That doesn't sound so safe, right?
There are over 1,300 harmful ingredients that are banned for cosmetic (includes bath and body products) use in Europe but only 11 here in the USA. We are at a higher risk for Body Burden. It comes from the chemicals and pollutants in our environment and it also comes from products we apply to our bodies.
So what should you do to lower that body burden? Read labels, question ingredients, research... the more you know, the better!
Here are some educational resources you can check out to help you navigate this toxic world:
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics' Red List for a quick reference of ingredients to avoid when shopping
Use the Think Dirty® app to learn about the potentially toxic ingredients in your personal care products. Just scan the product barcode and Think Dirty will give you easy-to-understand information on the product and its ingredients.
Remember, we have a lot of power as consumers. We need to use our hard earned money to speak volumes! Start learning about companies that actually have your health and safety in mind and purchase from them. Write the brands you used to buy from and let them know that you will not be purchasing from them anymore because of the questionable and harmful ingredients they use. Hopefully, with more pressure from consumers, they will start doing their part and have our health and safety in mind. You can also help by telling the Senate that we need safer cosmetics, here.
